The Identity Project

Every year, some 40 million children are born but not registered.
No identity means no social care, no health provision, as far as anyone knows, they never existed...

One of the most stark findings from the Young People's Commission for Africa was just this. That without a birth certificate, children could be denied their basic rights to school, health care and housing. They may not be able to marry, open a bank account or vote.
And if they do not officially exist, they are more likely to be vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Understandably this was one of the major concerns of the pupils that worked on the YPCFA.

This is why we are running the next Gemin-i Plus project on the subject of Identity and Human Rights in conjunction with Plan UK. We are also big supporters on Plan's new Universal Birth Registration Project.

The ID project will see pupils from a number of countries investigating the concept of Identity, who defines us and how do we define ourselves?
The project will culminate in a giant educational resource about these issues, complete with lesson plans, extra curricular activities and interviews with celebrities.
